Pupils get advanced screening of Medical School Open Day programme

Senior pupils from Oldmachar Academy will be given the opportunity for a sneak preview of the Medical School's innovative, interactive programme at the University of Aberdeen's Open Day on Tuesday, August 26. Katie Wild and friends can get hands-on with Harvey, the Cardio-vascular simulator, Sim-Man, the Universal Patient Simulator, as well as trying out a cutting-edge keyhole surgery simulator.
Visitors to the Open Day can take the opportunity to find out more about careers in medicine and what life as a doctor is really like, through a combination of interactive sessions and talks from staff and current students.
Katie Wild (16) said: "I'm looking forward to attending the University's Open Day. I'm interested in going on to study Medicine and want to find out as much information as possible on the programmes available, as well as getting a flavour for what University life will be like. I've registered to take part in the departmental activities and am also looking forward to chatting to students about their experiences."
The University-wide Open Day combines exhibitions, talks and lectures with tours of the campus, incorporating sports facilities and student accommodation. Visitors will have the opportunity to get a real taste of student life through staying overnight in the University's halls of residence and attending an exclusive party at the Students' Union. An exciting programme of events will be taking place throughout the day, including live music, a Ready Steady Cook style demonstration hosted by University Rector, Clarissa Dickson Wright, and a Big Brother style Diary Room.
Marketing Officer Lisa Rattray commented: "This is our fourth Open Day and looks set to be the most successful ever. We're expecting visitors from Finland, Germany and China, as well as from throughout the UK and Ireland. The programme has something for everyone, with sessions specifically tailored for mature students, parents and teachers."
The Medical School's programme runs exclusively at the Foresterhill campus, with buses provided from King's College. Booking is essential.

Katie Wild, a senior pupil at Oldmachar Academy, will get a sneak preview of some of the medical exhibits from the Centre, which will be on display during the Open Day next month, including, keyhole surgery, suturing and infection control stations; "Harvey" (cardiovascular simulator); "SimMan" (universal patient simulator); x-rays; instruments; and samples. Also in attendance will be Dr Paul Lian, Clinical Skills Centre Manager.
