U.S. Under Attack from Students

Students and politicians will be arguing over American foreign policy at the first debate to be held at the University of Aberdeen in the new academic year.

Aberdeen University Debater is to host the debate on Monday 20th September at 7.30pm in the debating chamber at Marischal College. The debate is free of charge and is open to members of the public.

The motion before the House will be “This House believes that Uncle Sam should stay at home.” With America acting as a global policeman to solve the world’s problems, the debate is likely to centre on the recent failures of American intervention in the Middle East and in Afghanistan. The speakers will be questioning whether or not America can and should continue to interfere in disputes outside of their borders.

The speakers taking part in the debate will each have seven minutes to put forward their case, before the debate is opened up to the floor. Guest speakers at the event later this month include Brian Adam (SNP) MSP, David Davidson (Conservative) MSP, Robin Harper (Green) MSP, Alex Johnstone (Con) MSP, and Angus Robertson (SNP) MP.

Greg Murray, the University Debater President for the forthcoming academic year is looking forward to another successful debate. He said: “In the last two years we have seen increased numbers of people attending the opening debate, and I hope that this year will be no different.

“Looking at the guests we have, as well as a topic that remains at the forefront of the media, I am confident this will be another successful and inspiring evening.”
