Leading figures from finance and science honoured

Three leading figures from the worlds of finance and science will be honoured today at the University of Aberdeen’s Winter Graduation ceremonies.

Susan Rice CBE, Chairman and Chief Executive of Lloyds TSB Scotland, leading epidemiologist Sir Roy Anderson and Dr Bill Buyers, the distinguished physicist, will all receive honorary degrees.

The timing of their ceremonies, which will all take place at Elphinstone Hall, is as follows:

Friday, November 28 at 11am

Susan Rice CBE, FRSE, BA, MLitt, DHC, DBA

Chairman and Chief Executive, Lloyds TSB Scotland plc

Susan Rice became the first women to head a UK clearing bank when she took over as Chairman and Chief Executive of Lloyds TSB Scotland. Originally from the United States, Mrs Rice is a graduate of the University. She is also the first Chairman of Edinburgh's Festival Forum and has chaired the Edinburgh International Book Festival since 2001.

Sir Roy Anderson FRS, FmedSci

Rector, Imperial College London

Sir Roy Anderson, a leading epidemiologist, became Rector of Imperial College London in July 2008. Previously, in 2000, he had founded its Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, focused on diseases such as AIDS and HIV, SARS, bird flu and pandemic influenza. He has advised widely on public health and disease control and is also a former Chief Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Defence.

William J L Buyers FRSC, FinstPhys

Guest Scientist and Principal Research Officer (Retired) for the National Research Council, Canada

Dr Bill Buyers, an Aberdeen graduate, has enjoyed a distinguished career in condensed matter physics, in particular his scientific breakthroughs in the field of magnetism. Since 1965 he has pursued his career in Canada, recently retiring as a Principal Research Officer of its National Research Council.
