Jailbreak, an annual event run by Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign, recently saw ten teams make a break from the North-east for sunnier climes.
The pyjama-clad team of University of Aberdeen students Kim McLeod, Rachel O'Neill and Lucy McGregor broke out of their student mould for the weekend in the name of charity.
The Stagecoach-sponsored Jailbreak challenge is simple – contestants are given 36 hours to get as far away from the Granite City as possible without spending any of their own money.
Contestants are asked to raise a minimum of £250 in sponsorship for their attempt and the team that reached the furthest point (as the crow flies) - and provide photographic evidence - were rewarded with a cash prize of £300 and the opportunity to travel hundreds, if not thousands, of miles for free!
The competition began on Friday, October 17 at 9am with all 35 contestants 'breaking' out of the gates at King's College, Old Aberdeen – each desperate to reach the bus/train station and airport before the other.
Kim, Rachel and Lucy managed to blagg free tickets from Aberdeen bus station to Edinburgh airport. With no success from any airlines the girls made their way to the Edinburgh Train station and managed to board a train to Birmingham.
They then headed to Birmingham airport where they stayed the night and in the early hours of the morning caught a flight to Alicante. The first point of call was the beach in Benidorm for some Sangria. The whole journey was completed by the girls wearing pyjamas.
The second place team consisting of Andrew Sweeney and Jenny Smith, made it to the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. They ventured through Skye and boarded a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to get to Lochboisdale, South Uist. Andrew and Jenny then made it on a minbus to Eriskay where they managed to island hop to Barra -returning on a separate ferry, completing the long yet worthy jourmey for second place.
