Aberdeen graduate scoops prestigious safety and reliability accolade

An Aberdeen graduate has been awarded a prestigious accolade at a major industry event recognising the importance of safety and reliability.

Yuh Shu NG received the 2008 SaRS Best Dissertation Award at an annual dinner hosted by The Safety and Reliability Society.

Yuh Shu graduated from the University in 2007 with a distinction from the MSc Programme in Safety Engineering.  She was awarded the esteemed accolade for her dissertation, "Safety Integrity Level, A Study of the Role, Purpose and Setting of Requirement in the Railway Industry", at the ceremony held earlier this month.

Yuh Shu's dissertation which focuses on the interpretation, role and purpose of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) within the railway industry, was written while on an industrial placement with Mott MacDonald in Croydon UK, as part of her degree programme.

Yuh Shu currently works with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore, an organisation which spearheads land transport developments within the country. Working within the Systems Assurance and Integration Division, she is involved in the management of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety (RAMS), System Integration and Electromagnetic Compatibility of railway systems.

This year's annual Safety and Reliability dinner marked the 20th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster.  Eminent speakers to the event included Mr Chris Allen, HSSE Director, Oil and Gas UK and Professor David Alexander, Director Aberdeen Centre for Trauma Research, who discussed the merits of the Safety Case regime and the associated improvements to offshore safety.
