Councillor's widow to present £25,000 in his memory

The widow of Aberdeen City councillor John Porter is to hand over the proceeds of a fundraising dinner held in his memory to the University of Aberdeen’s cardiology research unit.

The money was raised at a St Andrew's Day dinner and dance organised by the Lord Provost's Charitable Trust.

Lord Provost Peter Stephen chose to support cardiology research and support charities in tribute to Councillor Porter, who sadly died last year.

"I am delighted that the St Andrew's Day dinner and dance raised so much money for good causes and we are pleased to be handing over a donation of £25,000 to the cardiology research unit at the University of Aberdeen to allow the team to continue its sterling work," said the Lord Provost.

"The Lord Provost's Charitable Trust allows us to support city charities as well as focus on specific issues such as this one, which was chosen in memory of Councillor Porter."

The Lord Provost and Mrs Evelyn Porter will visit Ward 20 at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary this Wednesday (February 27) to meet Dr Graham Hillis, who will accept the donation.

Dr Hillis said: 'We are delighted that the Lord Provost's Charitable Trust has been so successful with the fundraising on behalf of the University of Aberdeen's work in heart research and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to this effort, both in terms of time and money.

"The funds raised will be spent on specialised computer software that enables us to study in great detail the function of the heart and will also support a new project we are undertaking looking at the mechanisms whereby new blood vessels develop within the heart.

"We hope this work will benefit patients both in Aberdeen and beyond."

The Lord Provost's Charitable Trust is a fund independent of Aberdeen City Council and was set up for the millennium to support good causes of all kinds in Aberdeen.

The dinner on November 30 was attended by 200 guests, who were entertained by The Flying Pigs and the music of Whigmaleerie. A charity auction raised further cash.

The next event being run by the Trust is a Diamond Ball at the Ardoe House Hotel on Friday, April 11. All the profits from this event will be split equally between Marie Curie Cancer Care and UCAN, the North-east urological cancer charity.
