Wallace elected European President

A University of Aberdeen professor has been elected head of an influential organisation set up to monitor the rapdily changing landscape of European society.

Professor Claire Wallace was elected President of the European Sociological Association (ESA) at its recent conference in Glasgow.

Her work will involve playing a major role in influencing policy brought about by the social transformations currently taking place in Europe.

"It's an honour to be elected President at a time of massive changes in Europe, including the transformations in east and central Europe and the increasing integration of the European Union," said Professor Wallace.

"Sociology has much to contribute to European level debates and developments, and the ESA has an important role to play in setting the research agenda for bodies such as the European Commission and the newly created European Research Council."

The ESA was established in 1992 to facilitate sociological research, teaching and communication on European issues, and to give sociology a voice in European affairs.

It is an academic association of sociologists and a non-profit Europe-wide association made up of over 700 members.

Other parts of Professor Wallace's remit will include assisting in the development of sociological careers through a variety of workshops and seminars for people at all stages of their careers.
