The chance to sign up for one of the biggest events in the University of Aberdeen calendar is up for grabs following the launch of the Open Day ’07 website.
New-look web pages giving details on the Open Day are now up and running ahead of the big event on August 28. Thousands of visitors from throughout the UK and Europe descended on Aberdeen for last year's event and 2007 looks set to be even more popular.
The website – www.abdn.ac.uk/openday - is a guide to the comprehensive range of presentations, departmental activities, exhibitions, demonstrations and campus tours organised for the day.
Some of the highlights announced include bands from the Aberdeen music scene playing live in The Hub; open top city bus tours; thespians from the University Students' Drama Societies performing one-act plays on campus; and a sneak preview of the new Aberdeen Student Radio Station.
Prospective students arriving by train or plane can consult the website about booking a free bus from the station or airport to take them straight to campus. And an experienced team of Student Ambassadors will be on hand when they get there to answer any questions or queries about the University.
Lesley MacLennan, the University's Open Day Co-ordinator, said: "We aim to make the day as much fun as possible for visitors and try to give them a real flavour of what life as a student at the University of Aberdeen is like.
"We will have a huge range of interesting activities on offer throughout the Open Day, both at the King's College campus and at the School of Medicine at Foresterhill. All in all, the day will feature a packed programme with something for everyone - which makes it so important that prospective students take a few minutes to book online now or risk missing out on activities they're interested in."
The Open Day is aimed mainly at those thinking of coming to study at the University in September 2008, although late applicants for 2007 entry are also welcome to attend.
Isla Thomson, BSc Biomedical Science (Physiology) and Olafemi Xavier, BSc in Psychology both took the time to soak up the campus experience on past Open Days.
"I was always interested in going to Aberdeen to study, but my mind was made up when I attended the Open Day and saw the beautiful surroundings of King's College and met so many enthusiastic people," said Isla.
And Olafemi explained: "I like Aberdeen because it has the history of an ancient city and all the good points that come with living in a modern, upbeat area. It has the shops, accessibility and nightlife but few of the problems that come with living in a larger city like litter, pollution and overcrowding."
Lesley added, "The University of Aberdeen is a wonderful place to be a student and the Open Day is the ideal opportunity to find out more about what's on offer. We're confident that anyone interested in coming along on August 28 will get a fantastic flavour of what campus life is all about."
