Graduates from the University of Aberdeen are being invited to special receptions being held for alumni later this month in Lerwick and Kirkwall.
The University is celebrating 500 years of teaching and learning this year and has always had a special regard for its long-standing tradition of growing graduates from Shetland and Orkney.
It has been some time since the University has organised events in the Shetland and Orkney Islands and this will be the first alumni receptions that Professor C Duncan Rice, Principal, has hosted such an event in Lerwick and Kirkwall.
Professor Rice will be accompanied by Cathy Macaslan, the University’s Vice Principal for Learning and Teaching. She explains: “We are looking forward to welcoming alumni and guests to this month’s receptions being held in Lerwick and Kirkwall.
“We hope to have the opportunity to meet once again with graduates of the University, and others with Aberdeen connections, to let them know about recent developments and future plans and to hear about graduates’ further success. It will also be a great chance to catch up with old friends.”
The University has extended invitations to alumni, school contacts and key business people from the area. The University’s merger with the Northern College has built up a great community of graduates who have close links with the City, the region and beyond. It is hoped that graduates from the Northern College, who are now part of the University’s Shetland and Orkney alumni communities, will be able to attend and that the evenings will be an opportunity to exchange their news, ideas and views with each other.
It is hoped that the receptions will encourage the University’s graduates to keep in touch and continue to be a part of this historic University.
The first event will take place in Kirkwall, Orkney, on Tuesday, October 25 at The Orkney Hotel, 40 Victoria Street. This will be followed by another reception in Lerwick, Shetland, on Wednesday, October 26, at 6.30pm, at the Lerwick Town Hall. Tickets for the receptions are priced at £5, which includes canapés and drinks. Guests are most welcome to attend these special events. To book a place, please call Lynne Anderson, Alumni Relations Office, University of Aberdeen on: (01224) 273234 or email: l.anderson@abdn.ac.uk no later than October 21.
