Academics gather for arsenic book launch

Scientists from across the University of Aberdeen are gathering at a city bookshop tomorrow night for the launch of a book detailing an ongoing environmental health disaster.

Venomous Earth is an account of how and why tens of thousands of people are dying from drinking water contaminated with naturally occurring arsenic in Bangladesh and West Bengal.

University Professor Andy Meharg - an arsenic expert - has written the book about the tragedy which began when tubewells were dug to provide water for people who were dying after consuming contaminated surface water.

The wells were supposed to be a solution to the crisis but also became contaminated from arsenic which occurs naturally in the rocks below.

Venomous Earth is launched at Blackwells Bookshop in Old Aberdeen’s High Street tomorrow at 5.30pm.
