Students host Destinations 2005

A one-day conference covering expeditions and fieldwork is taking place in Aberdeen next month. For the first time, the University of Aberdeen is hosting Destinations 2005 on Wednesday, February 16, and the event is open to everyone.

The event has been organised by the University's Expedition Society and Geography Department and will take place between 2.00 and 9.00pm.

Attendees will hear from speakers from the Royal Geographic Society, and the Royal Scottish Geographic Society along with a range of specialists in fieldwork and expeditions.

The full-day programme will include lectures and workshops covering topics including planning, logistics, medical and safety, filming, funding, and much more.

Workshops included in the programme range from tropical, polar, marine and desert expeditions and associated fieldwork and will be covered in a way that can be transferable through the disciplines eg. biological, geographical, and anthropological.

The main aim of the event is to provide the necessary information for people to organise their own expeditions, and to bring like-minded people together, to share ideas and meet future travel companions.

Jessamy Marsden, an undergraduate student at the University and one of the organisers of Destinations 2005, said: "This is the first year that this conference is being held at the University of Aberdeen. We hope it will prove to be a successful event and will hosted on an annual basis. Although it is open to everyone, it is primarily aimed at students. I would like to encourage anyone with an interest in travelling, expeditions or fieldwork to register as I hope this will be a very informative event."

The event has been sponsored by the Royal Scottish Geographic Society and the registration fee is £15, or £10 for students. To register or for further details about the conference visit: www.abdn.ac.uk/~src267/destinations
