The Scottish finals of an international competition for law students from around the world will take place at the University of Aberdeen next week.
Teams from the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Strathclyde and the Robert Gordon University will take part in the competition at the Law School on Friday, 9 February.
The winners of the Scottish final will then go on to compete in the Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition at Maastricht University, Netherlands between 11-14 April.
The Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition is an annual competition for the winners of national competitions across the world. It provides an exciting opportunity for law students to learn and practice interviewing and counselling skills as well as to meet young (and not so young) lawyers from an amazing range of nations and cultures.
Representing the University of Aberdeen at next week’s final will be Samantha Blaikie and Lucy Griffiths. They won the internal competition organised by Malcolm Combe from the Law School and presided over by retired solicitors Keith Napier and Elizabeth Merson.
Dr Susan Stokeld, who alongside Fiona Barker from the Law School, organised the event commented: "This competition offers DPLP students an invaluable opportunity to develop client communication skills ahead of a traineeship and is an excellent forum to meet and engage with students from other Law Schools.
"Each team acting as lawyers conduct an interview with a ‘client’ who is seeking legal advice. The students advise the client in a consultation observed by a panel of three judges and are assessed on a range of communication and professional skills.
"We are delighted to have support from expert judges who will be joining us on the 9th for a stimulating and enjoyable day."
Malcolm Combe, who worked with the students taking part in the finals, added: “We are all looking forward to welcoming the teams from around Scotland to campus this week for the Scottish finals of the ICCC.
“In previous years our students have enjoyed taking part in the competition and I am sure this year will be no different.
The finals will take place at the University’s Old Aberdeen campus from 9am to 5pm.
