An Aberdeen medical student has won gold in an international Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition.
Andrew Ablett, who is in third year studying medicine, beat opponents from as far afield as Brazil, Malaysia and Poland to win the Edinburgh Open Scottish Championships, held at Meadowbank Stadium.
Despite coming up against more experienced opposition, several of whom are two weight classes heavier, Andrew made it to the final where he triumphed over Ireland’s Ciaran McFadden, a veteran of the sport with a string of victories under his belt.
In addition to his success in martial arts, Andrew also received a national award from the British Geriatric Society for best presentation at a national conference, despite competing against consultants and senior registrars.
Andrew's presentation was about a risk score he developed which may help to identify older people who are at risk of poor outcomes on admission to the emergency general surgical setting, based on information obtained on their admission to hospital.
Andrew said: “I am very fortunate to have a martial arts mentor in Arek Zienkiewicz and an academic mentor in Professor Phyo K Myint, and I’d like to thank them for the key role they have played in helping me achieve this success.
"In the coming year I hope to build upon these achievements, whilst continuing to train and study hard, so that I am able to represent Aberdeen University to the best of my ability.”
