Chinese New Year to be celebrated in style

The University of Aberdeen will mark the Chinese New Year this weekend with a traditional lion dance, a kung fu demonstration and Chinese food tasting among a host of other activities to welcome the year of the rooster.

Organised by the University’s Confucius Institute and International Centre, events to mark the beginning of the Lunar New Year will kick off at Elphinstone Hall and the Linklater Rooms on Saturday January 28 and continue throughout next week at the Hub.

All are welcome to join in the events that are suitable for all ages. Entry for adults costs £3 and £1 for children.

12pm-4pm Chinese New Year Gala TV show

We will be showing a repeat of the traditional Chinese New Year Gala TV show performance, which is one of the most watched TV shows on Earth with a huge variety of performances throughout the day including music, dance, drama and comedy.

12pm-1pm

The Confucius Institute teachers will put on a performance which will include traditional Chinese dancing, singing, playing musical instruments as well as a number of other pieces. 

1pm-3pm Chinese Food

Traditional Chinese food will be served.

1pm – 3pm Fun activities for all the family

There will be activities for the whole family: Chinese calligraphy, lantern-making, mask-making, paper dragon-making, and ping pong.  There will also be an opportunity for people to learn how to make their own dumplings to take away and cook at home. 

3.15-3.45pm Kung Fu Demonstration & Lion Dance

Sifu Bruce Clark’s Yee’s Hung Ga will return with a spectacular Kung Fu Demonstration and Lion Dance to welcome in the New Year.

 4pm ‘The Bells’ midnight China time – final countdown to New Year

Additional Activities

Every day from Monday Jan 30 – Friday Feb 3, 11am – 1pm, there will be various Chinese activities in the Hub including Chinese games, Chinese writing and paper-cutting. We will also be supporting special activities in local schools the week of Chinese New Year.
