Aberdeen will become a melting-pot of discovery, debate and entertainment when it hosts Explorathon this Friday (September 30).

Led by the University of Aberdeen and supported by the European Commission, Explorathon will showcase the cutting-edge research being conducted in the nation’s universities using a range of exciting and interactive formats for people of all ages and interests.

Explorathon or European Researchers’ Night is the largest public engagement with research event in Europe and this year is coordinated across 250 cities. In Scotland the University of Aberdeen leads the project which includes partners in the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Strathclyde and St Andrews.

The day kicks off with Explorathon in the City Centre where ‘science buskers’ will entertain shoppers with scintillating science demonstrations in front of Marks and Spencers from 10am - 5pm.  The dark history of Aberdeen’s pirates will be dug-up from 12.30pm - 1.30pm in Aberdeen Maritime Museum.  The fun continues into the night with a pub quiz and Bright Club comedy night at Underdog from 7pm.   Other highlights include a special screening of Inception in the Belmont Filmhouse

Most of the events are free but some require booking at www.explorathon.co.uk/aberdeen

Project coordinator, Chris Croly, said ‘We have a really great set of events this year, from nutrition and health to a unique one off pub quiz where contestants will get the chance to handle some museum artefacts.

“We have such a wealth of cutting edge research at the University of Aberdeen to draw upon and the programme for this year really reflects the importance of the research being undertaken here.”
