Sports related concussion is a major topic of interest around the world with concerns about the immediate management and long-term implications of poorly managed cases. Yet sports concussion management is not part of the undergraduate or postgraduate curriculum of most medical specialties and many doctors and healthcare practitioners remain unaware of how to manage the condition.
Scotland was the first nation in the world to launch a single policy for concussion back in 2015. A policy that applies to all sports, age groups and whether you are a parent, athlete, coach, or medic. The Scottish guidance is now in its third revision and has prompted a similar approach by the rest of the UK and Australia in the last 12 months, with the project motto "If in doubt sit them out" having been also shared across the projects.
Dr Hanson, a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine and a University of Aberdeen graduate, will present on this fascinating subject. Dr Hanson will cover grassroots concussion and immediate care training, as well as highlight the rewarding career of sport and exercise medicine. Concussion is not the only player welfare initiative that Dr Hanson has been involved in, having been at the forefront of standard setting for sports pre-hospital emergency care and training for the last twenty years. He has written and delivered courses for Scottish Rugby, Irish Rugby, Premier League Football, the Football Association, and World Rugby, which have benefited a handful of high-profile cases such as cervical spine fractures and televised cardiac arrests in elite sport. Over 15,000 medical practitioners and first aiders have completed the World Rugby First Aid in Rugby (FAIR) course that Dr Hanson authored. Dr Hanson now helps deliver training for UEFA, FIFA, and World Rugby on a global level at World Cups and major championships.
Joining information will be shared with those registered a couple of days prior to the event.
