Professor Bill Naphy will consider how 'normative' concepts of masculine, feminine and other ideas of gendered identity have developed in the course of the last century.
Cultures continually shape and reshape ideas of what a ‘man’ and a ‘woman’ are as well as finding space for those who do not fit these constructions. This talk by Professor Bill Naphy, on Thursday 24 June from 4pm-5.15pm (BST), will consider how ‘normative’ concepts of masculine, feminine and other ideas of gendered identity have developed in the course of the last century.
Considerable focus will be on how these ideas have been presented via media such as film. Starting in an age where pink was becoming a colour associated with girls instead of boys (where in the 19th century it was seen, like blood, as a manly colour) and blue shifting to boys from girls (where it had been for centuries a colour associated with the Virgin Mary) the talk will examine these changes in behaviour, mannerisms, and cultural assumptions on how one’s gender is meant to be ‘seen’ and ‘done’.
