This is a past event
We are delighted to be holding the third event of The University of Aberdeen Alumni History Chapter and on behalf of the Chapter we would like to invite you to our Pecha Kucha Evening!
Join us on Thursday 11 March at 7pm (GMT) to hear a series of Pecha Kucha presentations from alumni and students. For those who may be unfamiliar with Pecha Kucha, the format consists of 20 slides with the presenter spending 20 seconds on each slide. Following each presentation there will be an opportunity to ask questions and at the end of the evening there will be an opportunity to stay for a discussion.
Our presenters for the evening will include Ian Glazman-Schillinger, Alice Adams, Ashleigh Black and Rose Luminiello.
Ian Glazman-Schillinger - The Internet Archive, the Final Resting Place of 475 Billion Webpages and Counting
Ian is currently in his first year of a PhD in American and Digital History at Syracuse University. Having graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2017, he has since continued to build on the firm foundation of academic and public historical inquiry provided to him by the University.
The Internet Archive today represents the single largest collection of archived material in human history, by individual document, yet its holdings remain largely unknown. This enigmatic and inherently ephemeral amalgamation of both born digital and digitised materials comprises over 475 billion webpages, 28 million books and texts, 14 million audio recordings, 6 million videos, 3.5 million images, and 580,000 software programmes. This Herculean effort to archive the web (and near enough everything else!) is managed entirely by a non-profit charity run out of San Francisco. In Ian's presentation, he hopes to briefly scratch the surface of this gargantuan collection, while showing off some of the more astounding aspects of The Internet Archive.
Alice Adams - The Tower of London Has Too Much History
Alice is an Interpretation Manager for Historic Royal Palaces, a self-funding charity that looks after six palaces, including the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace. Alice graduated from Aberdeen with a Cultural History MA (Hons) and from St Andrews with a Museum and Gallery Studies MLitt.
When William the Conqueror built a mighty stone tower at the centre of his fortress in the 1070s, defeated Londoners must have looked on in awe. Nearly a thousand years later, the Tower still has the capacity to fascinate and horrify. It's the Tower's history that draws the crowds, but its overlapping roles as fortress, palace and prison are complex, so how do you get visitors excited and give them goosebumps instead of glazing over and wishing for the axe to end it?
Ashleigh Black - Cyanide and Silver for the Perfect Picture
Ashleigh is a 3rd year PhD researcher in Film & Visual Culture at the University of Aberdeen. Ashleigh's research centralises on the life and work of Scottish photographer George Washington Wilson. She is investigating how notions of the panoptic can facilitate and widen our understanding of Wilson's cityscapes and how he used the city space. Her presentation will focus on the dangers of nineteenth century photography using George Washington Wilson's wet collodion process.
Rose Luminiello - Nuns: What Do They Do Anyway?
From the cinematic to the surreal, the happy stories of camraderie to ghastly records of abuse, nuns have quite the varied reputation. But what did they actually do that their popular memory is so strong? By exploring the diverse, global work of nuns through their own letters and diaries, what emerges is a complex story about how nuns permeated life from birth, education, healthcare, and social care to death. In this short presentation Rose will focus down on their impact in breaking class barriers through who they were and how they educated during the period of 1860-1950.
Online registrations have now closed. If you would like to attend this event please email us at alumni@abdn.ac.uk and we will register you.
