We are delighted to invite you to a fascinating Brexit talk and discussion led by Professor Michael Keating, Professor of Scottish Politics at the University of Aberdeen.
We are pleased to be hosting this event in partnership with the School of Social Science. The event is taking place on Thursday 6 June in King’s College Conference Centre at 6.30pm.
After the Brexit discussion has concluded, guests will be invited to enjoy drinks and networking with their fellow alumni in James MacKay Hall.
Scotland, Brexit and the future of the Union Brexit was promoted as a way of ‘taking back control’ or restoring the sovereignty of the British Parliament and people. In Scotland, however, understandings of the constitution are different. The United Kingdom is a union of nations that have their own institutions of government. In this understanding, the British and European Unions are complementary and share many features.
The EU has provided an external support system to devolution and Brexit has exposed tensions within this settlement. Brexit has provoked a blockage in the Westminster Parliament and in Scotland there is also a constitutional blockage. Majorities in 2014 and in 2016 voted to stay in the British and the European Unions. Now they cannot do so and yet there is no combination of unionism, independence, Brexit, and remaining in the EU, that carries majority support.
Professor Michael Keating will expand upon these topics further during the discussion.
