Steve Aitken grew up in Aberdeen and studied at the University, graduating BSc Hons Computing Science in 2001. After spending time working in Canada, he returned to the UK and set up his own business, Intelligent Plant, which specialises in the performance monitoring of equipment and processes through analysis and visualisation of real-time data, and the management of alarm data.
In 2014, a philanthropic gift from Intelligent Plant enabled the creation of the Inform Prize. The Prize develops the teamwork and presentation skills of 3rd year Computing Science students and culminates in participating teams developing and presenting software solutions to address a specific problem or task. This year is the 10th anniversary of Steve’s support for the Prize, and we are incredibly grateful to him, and Intelligent Plant for the impact the Prize has had on student experience.
In 2022, Steve was selected for the Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) scheme, spending one day a week at the University developing projects that promote innovation and encourage entrepreneurship. The scheme also helps boost the University of Aberdeen's industrial links and inspires its staff and students to become the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
While also volunteering his time and expertise to mentor students, sitting as a key member of the External Business Advisory Group, and offering work placements to students, Steve epitomises the essence of unwavering support and dedication to his alma mater. His support for the student community from helping the development of an entrepreneurial mindset to providing opportunities for networking and receiving industry-related advice underscores his commitment to fostering excellence and nurturing future talent and has empowered countless individuals to excel in their studies and careers.
We are honoured to recognise Steve for his exceptional contributions with the award of Alum of the Year.
