Rhod Sharp was born and educated in Perth, Scotland before moving to Aberdeen to study English at the University. He graduated in 1975 with an MA (Hons) English and was then selected as scholar of the St Andrews Society of New York, studying at Princeton University and obtaining a Masters which combined literature, theatre and politics.
Rhod had already been accepted onto the BBC trainee scheme and when he returned to the UK in 1976 began an enviable broadcasting career in the UK and the US. Major success followed, culminating in a 26-year period as presenter of Up All Night on BBC Radio 5 Live, once described by the Washington Post as 'probably the best night-time radio show in the world', before retiring in 2020.
Alongside his highly successful broadcasting career with the BBC, Rhod has been a long-term, dedicated supporter of the University. Despite his demanding schedule, he has remained a steadfast volunteer, actively participating in alumni events and facilitating connections among fellow graduates. In 2013, he accepted the key role of President of the University of Aberdeen Foundation board, displaying exceptional leadership and commitment which has been crucial to the organisation’s success. The alumni-founded and run Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation which works to encourage philanthropic support for the University from the United States.
Rhod’s close collaboration with the Development & Alumni Relations team along with his constant support for our work, impactful contributions, and selfless commitment, made him a standout choice for the Alumni Volunteer of the Year award and truly deserving of this recognition.
