HDR UK South-West seminar series is open to all. It is aimed at everyone who has an interest in any areas of health data science. This seminar focuses on the, 'Use of applied research to support Demand and Capacity modelling in the BNSSG healthcare system'. With speaker Richard Wood from NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board.

Abstract:

In many ways, the NHS is just a system of queues, whose timing and magnitudedepends on the balance between demand and capacity. Queueing time affects patient experience and outcomes and is routinely measured against key performance metrics, e.g., the 4-hour ED target. Quantifying the impact to these performance metrics on possible decisions relating to demand and capacity is important for effective healthcare management.

To this end, computational modelling and scenario analysis can be a valuable asset. Yet, many problems in the healthcare domain are complex and can require equivalently sophisticated solutions. This and the numerous gaps in the scientific literature combine to provide a rich environment for novel applied research. In this talk, I will give examples of how we have approached Demand and Capacity modelling for applied research initiatives in the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire healthcare systems. I will end by discussing the potential for related undertakings given the forthcoming publication of the NHS’s 10-year plan.
