The first HERU seminar of 2024 will be delivered by James Altunkaya, an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow in the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC) at the University of Oxford Nuffield Department of Population Health.
In the seminar James will present his work on 'Examining the impact of structural uncertainty using simulation challenges in type 2 diabetes'.
Abstract: Structural uncertainty is known to be an important, but often unexamined, contributor to healthcare decision uncertainty. Conducting common simulation exercises across independent modelling groups has allowed us to investigate the structural drivers of differences in cost-effectiveness estimates between diabetes models. We show how simulation exercises can be used to enable model comparison and quantitative examination of both the drivers and impact of structural uncertainty. These exercises could be replicated to examine the effect of structural uncertainty in other disease areas. Healthcare decision makers may benefit from modellers participating in simulation exercises which can demonstrate the relative suitability of different decision models for specific decision problems.
*Please note that a sandwich lunch will be provided after the seminar.*
