An evening of talks that will shed a light into some of the latest thinking and understanding on health in Scotland.
INNOVATEHEALTH is the latest in VisitScotland's series of public talks that explore the incredible innovation taking place across the country.
Your health is the most valuable thing you have. Digital technologies, ageing populations, access to appropriate care regardless of means and ever increasing awareness of diet and its effect are all shaping the current debate around how to best look after our health.
Now is the time to learn more and hear from 3 leading Scottish experts about how we can keep innovating the nation and ensure Scotland retains its place as a leading country for health care and science. Perfect for everyone interested in healthcare, diet and nutrition, healthy ageing, wellbeing, equality of access to healthcare, and more.
VisitScotland will be joined by;
Professor Lora Heisler, Chair in Human Nutrition, The Rowett Institute at the University of Aberdeen.
Professor Lora Heisler of Aberdeen Universities Rowett Institute is an international expert in obesity and the links and risks associated with developing type 2 diabetes. Professor Heisler will ask why obesity is spreading across the nation and across the globe and discuss practical strategies we can adopt to try and improve health. Professor Heisler will also discuss why having too much body fat can impact our health. She will also talk about how chemicals that we make in our brain control appetite, weight gain and weight loss. And how we can take advantage of this knowledge to work to improve health.
Professor Alex Johnstone, Personal Chair, The Rowett Institute at the University of Aberdeen.
Professor Alex Johnstone of Aberdeen Universities Rowett Institute is a recognised leading innovative UK researcher within the field of human appetite control and has worked with companies including Marks and Spencers Plc on food development. Professor Johnstone will discuss the wide ranging issue of 'Healthy Ageing' and the role of diet. There are now more people in the UK aged over 60 years than are under 18.5 years, so 'Ageing well' is priority public health message. She will discuss the role of dietary protein to optimising opportunities for good health, so that older people can take an active part in society and enjoy an independent and high quality of life.
Professor Helen Cheyne, Deputy Director of the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions Research Unit, University of Stirling, Professor of Maternal and Child Health Research, and the Royal College of Midwives (Scotland) Professor of Midwifery.
Professor Helen Cheyne, based at the University of Stirling NMAHP Research Unit, is a midwife internationally recognised for her research in maternity care. Professor Cheyne has evaluated maternity care policy, its impact on the way maternity services are provided and on women’s experiences of their maternity care for many years. Prof Cheyne will ask the question – what makes an ideal birth? She will discuss different (and some surprising) perspectives on what makes a ‘good’ birth and how these shape or should shape - the services women and families receive, and maybe even challenge our thinking about what makes an ideal birth.
