Tell us about your role at the University.

I am a Research Coordinator (RC) for the Grampian Data Safe Haven (DaSH), where we support researchers conducting unconsented health (and non-health) data studies within our secure Safe Haven computing environment. I work alongside the researchers to assist in the permissions process, planning of the project, and reviewing any statistical outputs during analysis. The RC role follows projects all the way through, from initial contact to project delivery and beyond, so you gain a close relationship with researchers.

What brought you to the University of Aberdeen?

I studied both my BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees here at the University of Aberdeen and always found the institution culture to be extremely positive.

What is your current focus?

To greater develop my personal skillset and knowledge of information governance, data science, and leadership. Current work projects include teaching and DaSH development.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The people I work with are great, and there's always a good work environment, and opportunities to build relationships across the team and beyond.

What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time to relax?

I started running in January 2024 and always enjoy a Saturday morning Parkrun.

What made you choose this career?

This might sound odd, but I fell into it. My background is in biomedical science and pharmacology, with a sprinkle of drug discovery and development. But when I saw the advertisement for this role, I felt I matched it as a person perfectly. My role involves being organised and on-the-ball, which was a brilliant fit.

If you could go back in time and choose a different career, what would you choose and why?

The other option I explored was going into pharmacokinetics which I enjoyed while at university.

What do you think is the most challenging part about your job?

Understanding the various data agreements that occasionally need to be in place for complex projects.

What is an accomplishment in life you are proud of?

Becoming a Mum and completing my first Half-Marathon.

Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My partner. He has the greatest drive and determination (and stubbornness) I've ever experienced in someone.
