Proud Capetonian James tells us about his role as a trial statistician, his fondness for active pursuits and how a good cup of rooibos tea helps to start his day |
- Tell us about your role at HSRU
-
I am employed as a trial statistician since March of 2023. Through my role I am involved in every aspect of Health Services Research projects within the unit, from study design to the dissemination of results. The goal is to work with clinical colleagues and patient partners to bridge the communicative gap between statistical theory and practical outcomes in a manner which is clear and informative to clinicians, patients and policy makers.
- Tell us a bit about your background and what you do now
-
I am a proud Capetonian, born and bred! Having recently completed my MSc in Biostatistics at UCT in 2022 I jumped at the offer to work at HSRU. I'm currently working as the statistician on 3 projects within the unit, namely GameOfStones, REFLECT and LetsTalk. This primarily involves contributing towards study designs, developing Statistical Analysis Plan (SAP), analysis of trial data and presenting trial results.
- How do you usually start your day?
-
After cycling to work I like to enjoy a good cup of rooibos tea or filter coffee. I have a quick catch up with the team and then get to work.
- What is your favourite thing about your job?
-
It's difficult to pick only one. I enjoy the supportive workplace and have loved working with the team. The opportunities to develop further knowledge is always available and I can't think of a better first job.
- How do you relax outside of work?
-
I like to be active outside of work. I practice yoga, climbing, hiking and football as well as exploring the countryside. Otherwise I enjoy catching up with friends, video and board games, as well as drinks and dinner parties.
- What was the last thing you posted about on social media or what was this last book you read?
-
I don't have X, but the last thing I posted about on social media was a tour of a commercial diving vessel I was treated to, really opened my eyes to the crazy life of a commercial diver! The stormlight archive series is a good read for any fellow fiction fans.
