MAPS

Many men experience urinary incontinence after prostate surgery.

MAPS, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme, is a multi-centre UK trial to evaluate whether pelvic floor muscle training and bladder training, delivered in four one-to-one sessions by a trained therapist (from a physiotherapy or nursing background), results in better urinary and other outcomes compared with standard management in men who are incontinent after prostate surgery. There are two contemporaneous but separate trials, one after radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and the other after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for benign prostatic enlargement.

MAPS began in December 2004. The aim was to recruit 800 men in total (400 to each of the trials). Recruitment to MAPS closed in September 2008, with 411 men recruited to the radical trial and 442 to the TURP.  The results have been disseminated by presentation at the International Continence Society / International UroGynaecology Association annual meeting (prize for best clinical abstract) and in an HTA Monograph, and in the Lancet.  Follow-up of the participants at two and four-to-six years has also been completed.
