Patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a severe traumatic brain injury routinely undergo a period of sedation to allow for mechanical ventilation and prevent any worsening of their brain injury. BIS-TBI will look at the use of simple bedside brain monitoring to assess whether providing bespoke levels of sedation improves outcomes in these patients.
The initial observational study will look at the current degree of sedation, based on underlying brain activity; assessed using the non-invasive Bispectral Index (BIS) monitor in a blinded fashion.
The project will then go on to assess the feasibility of an interventional trial comparing the outcomes in patients who have sedation titrated according to BIS value, compared to standard care.
The observational study recruited its first patient in September 2019.
The project is led by Dr Callum Kaye based in the ICU of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the HSRU.
