Richard Caie

Richard tells us about his interest in volunteering, ethics and that he regards research applications as a puzzle, making it an enjoyable pastime

Tell us about your role at ACE: Along with my colleagues in the group, we critique research applications from researchers looking especially at the lay summary for acronyms/big medical words and ease of phrasing to the ear. We also talk with the researchers about their projects.
Tell us a bit about your background and what you do now: A retired ship captain, I occupy my time with volunteering at both universities (RGU and the University of Aberdeen), the Rowett Institute and NHS Grampian. Being a Patient Partner is my main love. I've taken an interest also in ethics and joined the main North of Scotland Ethics Committee as well as two other ethics panels.
What is your favourite thing about your role in ACE?: I enjoy the group work and camaraderie among the volunteers. I do crosswords, sudoku and puzzles, so I regard looking at research applications as a puzzle, making it an enjoyable pastime.
How do you usually start your day?: Slowly
How do you relax?: Walking, reading and campaigning to save our local St Fittick's Park, cooking curries, watching TV and puzzling.
What was the last thing you posted on your social media profiles?: I'm not a great fan of social media. It was probably something related to saving St Fittick's Park.
