Dr Jane Johnson, who is currently a research fellow at Macquarie University, Australia will be presenting an IAHS seminar entitled  'The vexing nature of conflicts of interest in surgery' in Room 115, HSB, 1pm-2pm on Monday 24th November.  A brief extract of the seminar follows:

Abstract:

Conflicts of interest arise in surgery just as they do in other areas of healthcare. However in surgery, the particular role conflicts of interest play is generally not well recognized or understood. In this paper I argue that surgical conflicts of interest are importantly different to those most frequently discussed in medicine, such as between GPs and the pharmaceutical industry, due to the kind of conditions under which they develop and the type of conflicts which are generated. This means that addressing conflicts of interest in surgery is a challenging task that demands the development of new approaches and strategies.
