Patients from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are underserved in clinical research, which is partly characterised by lower inclusion in research than one would expect from population estimates. Considering the barriers to including patients from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds in clinical research can inform the development of strategies to address such barriers. In turn, this would improve research design, make research more relevant to the target population, increase the generalisability of results, and ultimately help to ensure that research treatments and interventions can be successfully delivered to people who need them most.

Building on the NIHR INCLUDE project, the INCLUDE Ethnicity Framework, and the INCLUDE Impaired Capacity to Consent Framework, we have developed the INCLUDE Socioeconomic Disadvantage Framework. The framework was developed by researchers from the MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership (TMRP) Trial Conduct Working Group alongside key stakeholders, including public partners. It was developed to support researchers to design trials that are more inclusive of patients from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and is intended for use with trials involving populations that might include such patients.

At this webinar we will explore why inclusivity in research matters, introduce the framework outlining when and how it should be used, and describe how the framework can benefit stakeholders, such as researchers, funders, ethics committees, and individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. We will signpost where the framework and associated materials can be located, share pointers to make trials more inclusive of patients from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds (generated from patient and public partner discussions), and discuss next steps to make research more inclusive, focusing on the INCLUDE frameworks.
