Working with SMEs, community interest companies and football clubs on a large-scale international research project
In this workshop I will present some lessons from the European Fans In Training (EuroFIT) project. EuroFIT brings together academics from 9 institutions in 5 countries, 1 SME technology firm, 1 SME grant management firm, 1 community interest company and 15 professional football clubs. The aim of EuroFIT is to develop and evaluate a physical activity and sedentary time intervention for men aged 30-65 with a self-reported BMI of 27 and above and to deliver it in the stadia of the 15 participating clubs. The project is the very definition of ‘multidisciplinary’ and includes academics from public health, sociology, psychology, kinetics, dietetics, health economics, computer science, engineering, metabolic science, physiology and statistics. Maintaining productive relationships across such a large consortium can be challenging, but the results are rewarding. As we enter the fourth year of our five-year FP7 grant, I offer reflections on how to make such large-scale and ambitious projects run smoothly.
