The Epidemiology Group's programme of applied epidemiological research is focused on rheumatic and musculoskeletal conditions. We conduct studies across a range of arthritis and musculoskeletal health conditions, including:
- Common disabling conditions, such as chronic pain (including fibromyalgia) and fatigue
- Various inflammatory rheumatic diseases, in particular: axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis
- Rare rheumatological conditions (vasculitis).
Our research aims to understand the epidemiology of these conditions, with a specific focus on risk factors that are modifiable and which are therefore potential therapeutic targets. We conduct randomised trials of new therapies, aiming to improve patient outcomes and trials of preventative strategies. We use the results of these studies to design, implement and evaluate health services for patients with these conditions.
We also have a major interest in occupational outcomes for people with arthritis and musculoskeletal health conditions and this work is undertaken and part-funded within the Versus Arthritis / Medical Research Council Centre for Musculoskeletal Health and Work
The Epidemiology Group is led by Professor Gary Macfarlane (Clinical Chair of Epidemiology) and other senior investigators including Professor Gareth Jones (Professor in Epidemiology), Dr Rosemary Hollick (Clinical Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology) and Dr Elaine Wainwright (Lecturer in Musculoskeletal Health).
