Axial Spondyloarthritis (Axial SpA) is part of a group of related chronic inflammatory arthritis conditions under the broader heading of spondyloarthritides, which also includes psoriatic arthritis and reactive arthritis. Axial SpA usually involves the spine and pelvic joints, initially presenting as low back pain. However, it can also involve other joints, as well as the skin, bowel and eyes.
Generally diagnosed in early adulthood, axial SpA typically affects more men than women. Treatment is often a combination of prescription medications and physiotherapy to help prevent further joint damage and to alleviate symptoms of pain, stiffness and fatigue.
This condition includes periods of heightened disease activity and remission, often described as flares of which little is known about the onset, progression, or triggers. Additionally, quality of life, daily functioning and work impairment are important areas for research in this population.
