Dr Alfonso Martinez-Felipe appointed to high-profile energy transition role

Dr Alfonso Martinez-Felipe from the School of Engineering is among several new additions to the board of Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG).

Dr Martinez-Felipe, who is Hydrogen Champion for the University’s Centre for Energy Transition and a senior advisor to the University’s PrototAU student engineering team, is among five new appointees to the AREG board who will help guide the organisation’s development following a 68% increase in its membership over the last year.

The appointees from across industry and academia were selected following nominations from the group’s 230 member companies and a ballot of candidates.

Commenting on his new role, Dr Martinez-Felipe said: “I am truly honoured that the AREG members have trusted me with this excellent opportunity to contribute towards the energy transition in the north-east of Scotland.

“My aim will be to continue promoting links between academia, industry and our communities, further establishing our region as a leader in clean energies in the UK and internationally.

“Through the Centre for Energy Transition and our Schools, I will foster new initiatives for students and young researchers to work together in the challenges that we all share in reaching net zero.”

Professor John Underhill, the University’s Interdisciplinary Director for Energy Transition, added: “I am delighted to see Alf’s expertise and the quality of his research, impact and leadership recognised in this way.

“His elevation to the AREG board is a testament to his commitment to the energy transition in general and the role of hydrogen in particular, and underlines the key role that staff from across the University are playing in the energy transition here in the north-east.”
