Training for staff

Domestic Abuse Awareness Raising Tool

This online tool is a learning resource for professionals. It's an awareness-raising resource and serves as an introduction to domestic abuse and coercive control.

The tool provides an overview of the main considerations when responding to domestic abuse, however it does not replace specialist domestic abuse training.

Access the Domestic Abuse Awareness Raising Tool tool here.

L.I.S.T.E.N training

L.I.S.T.E.N is a new risk assessment tool developed by the Scottish Charity EmilyTest.

The tool is designed to give staff across Further and Higher Education institutions the skills to offer in-the-moment support to a victim/survivor of sexual violence or harassment, ensure they are safe and put in place clear next steps for support.

Emily Drouet was a University of Aberdeen student who started studying her Law degree in 2015. Tragically, Emily took her own life in March 2016 within our Student Accommodation, after experiencing Gender Based Violence at University. Given our direct connection to Emily's story, we are honoured to be rolling out L.I.S.T.E.N training.

In the training, you will hear from Fiona Drouet (Emily's Mum) and the EmilyTest training officer, who will set the scene as to the importance of this work and the family's experiences surrounding Emily's death.

This is, of course, difficult to hear, especially for colleagues in Aberdeen, but it is important that this message is delivered to outline the impact L.I.S.T.E.N can have in preventing suicide in the future.

There will also be in depth conversations about suicide and discussions around lived experience of Gender-Based Violence.

As a reminder, all staff at the University can access support from the Employee Assistance Programme (a 24/7 helpline), arrange a counselling or debrief session with our University Counselling Service or speak with their line manager to seek support for anything that L.I.S.T.E.N raises with them.

You can also reach out to Nick Edwards (Deputy Director of People) or Lisa Kilgour (Student Support Adviser specialising in GBV prevention and support) to discuss any element of the training before, during, or after attending.

L.I.S.T.E.N training schedule 2024

New session dates will be advertised when they become available.

Understanding and confronting sexual harassment at work

We all have a role to play in putting an end to sexual harassment in the workplace, whether it's by re-thinking our own attitudes and conduct, challenging the behaviour of others, supporting victims or working together to bring about cultural change in our organisation.

Combining powerful drama and first-person stories with insight from leading behavioural experts and practical strategies for action, this short course examines the nature of sexual harassment in the workplace and its impact on staff and sets out practical steps for tackling the problem.

Rape Crisis Scotland e-learning module

The training is an interactive, engaging Gender-Based Violence (GBV) E-learning module designed to give an overview of issues related to GBV. It uses a range of learning tools, such as quizzes, videos, and case studies to give students an introduction to the topic.
