University backs global campaign against gender based violence

The University of Aberdeen is showing its support for a worldwide campaign tackling violence against women and girls with a packed programme of interactive pop-up events taking place on campus across November and December.

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence (GBV) is an annual campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and runs until 10 December, World Human Rights Day.

Coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership, it is used by individuals and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. In 2022, the campaign is continuing its multi-year theme of 'Ending Femicide'.

Events taking place at the University include a series of information sessions, practical workshops and webinars designed to raise awareness among staff and students of some of the warning signs to look for and highlight the range of help and support that is available, from confidential reporting tools to the NHS sexual assault service and more.

Nick Edwards, Deputy Director of People, said: “One in four women in the UK will experience domestic abuse, with one in five experiencing sexual assault in her lifetime. These figures are higher in other parts of the world.

“The University is committed to tackling gender based violence and we work closely with a wide range of partners to do so. Abuse can happen to anyone, we want to raise awareness of what it can look like in different contexts and make sure people know where they can turn if they find themselves in an abusive or violent situation.”
