The University of Aberdeen was delighted to welcome colleagues from Developing Young Workforce (DYW) to a networking sharing event in the Sir Duncan Rice Library on 28 September.
DYW seeks to bridge the gap between employers and education to help all young people find fulfilling careers. Funded by the Scottish Government, it promotes meaningful engagement between schools, colleges or universities and employers to generate a sustainable pipeline of talent and skills across the region.
Organised by the Business School but involving colleagues across the University, the event gave DYW the opportunity to meet with a variety of key stakeholders, from student recruitment, business engagement and HR to the Decommissioning Centre and the Rowett Institute.
The event was opened by Professor Pete Edwards, Vice-Principal, Regional Engagement & Regional Recovery, followed by an introduction to DYW North East from its Director, Margo Milne. There followed a number of short presentations covering topics from widening access, to the University as an employer and an overview of our careers service.
Outreach activities delivered by various Schools within the University were highlighted and there was an opportunity to network and discuss how the University and DYW can work together more closely going forward.
DYW staff also had the opportunity to have a campus tour, showcasing our facilities, our buildings and giving them a chance to experience the ancient history of the campus.
Pam Cumming, Schools Engagement Officer and organiser of this event, said: “We work in a fantastic University, one that is open to all but one which many haven’t had the opportunity to visit. It was wonderful to have DYW join us for the morning and showcase the ancient campus, some of the outreach activities that we offer to local schools as well as learn more about what DYW do.
“The University of Aberdeen isn’t simply a place to study, it is also a major employer in the city and it was great for everyone to hear about the vast array of job prospects there are at the University.
“This was a very informative event and the networking proved valuable for all in attendance. I’ve worked with DYW for years and it was great to meet many of them for the first time in person rather than in an online meeting.”
