Aberdeen Royal Infirmary opened at Foresterhill in 1936 and is managed by NHS Grampian. Today the ARI site at Foresterhill is one of Europe's largest integrated clinical, research, teaching and commercial health sites and is comprised of many different hospital buildings, several of which are owned by or co-administered with the University of Aberdeen.

The original ARI building itself has been developed and extended over the years. The main entrance is very near the hospital's main bus terminus, while the Rotunda entrance can be found opposite the University's Polwarth Building.
