Biography
- I'm originally from Stirling in central Scotland. I did a BSc in Physics at the University of Edinburgh, followed by a PhD in Space Physics at University of Sussex . I then held Research Fellowships in Paris and back at Sussex planning the data handling for a complex experiment on the GEOS satellite under the auspices of the European Space Agency.
- In 1976 I was appointed to a lectureship at Sussex in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and latterly partly in the School Of Cognitive and Computing Sciences.
- In 1988 I moved to the University of Aberdeen as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing Science, where from February 1992 to July 1996 I was Head of Department. I took up this role again in November 1999 until July 2002. I was promoted to a personal chair in October 2001. From August 2002 until July 2003 I was head of the School of Psychology, Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
- In 2009 I retired from my full-time position and became an Emeritus Professor of Computing Science.
