Semantic categories across cultures
Across disparate disciplines, a dichotomy is often presented about whether semantic categories are innate and universal or learned and relative. The empirical data suggest a more complex trajectory. Drawing on data from a number of semantic domains (e.g., color, sound, smell), I shall illustrate how semantic categories are represented very early by infants. At the same time, there is considerable variation in semantic categories across cultures. This suggests a role for both biology and culture in shaping adult semantic systems, where the weighting of each depends on the specific semantic domain.
