Emeritus Professor Personal Details
BiographyJames Porter is professor emeritus of Scottish Ethnology, prior to which he held the Chair of Ethnomusicology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He was educated at the Universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh, and on graduation was awarded a British Council Fellowship to study the music of Janacek in Czechoslovakia. His 175 or so publications cover the fields of ethnology, folklore and ethnomusicology. He is a founding editor of the Garland Encyclopedia of World Music and has contributed large genre entries to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1980 and 2000 editions).
