Dr Daria Shapovalova at the Beyond Oil conference and the Arctic Circle Assembly

This October, Dr Daria Shapovalova showcased her expertise in energy law and Arctic affairs at two conference in Norway and Iceland. Beyond Oil conference is a is an interdisciplinary and international conference organised biennially by the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation (CET) at the University of Bergen. Daria presented her paper on a just transition in Aberdeen in the panel on “Perspectives on Just Transition”. She also participated in extensive discussion during the course of the conference, around policy and practice of energy transitions, and the role of networks of energy.

From Bergen, Daria travelled to Iceland, where on the 19th October she moderated the Energy Security and Citizens Conference organised by the Nordic Energy Research. The conference brought together over a 100 participants, and Daria chaired the panel on citizen engagement in energy transition featuring expert contributions. She then moderated the panel featuring Kjell-Arne Ottosson, Chairman of the Committee for Growth and Development in the Nordic region at the Nordic Council, Natuk Lund Olsen, Permanent Secretary of Agriculture, Self sufficiency, Energy and Environment in Greenland, and Gillian Martin, Minister for Energy and the Environment at the Scottish Government. On 20th of October, Daria opened and moderated a further ministerial panel discussion, this time as part of the Arctic Circle Assembly 2023. The panel focused on building the North Atlantic Green Energy Hub. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, former President of Iceland and Chair of the Arctic Circle said: “It is not a question of building it – it’s already here. The question is how to use it.” The session was organised by the Nordic Energy Research and featured Karen Ellemann, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Gillian Martin, Minister for Energy and the Environment at the Scottish Government and Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, Minister of the Environment, Energy and Climate in Iceland, as well as Halla Hrund Logadóttir, the Director-General of Iceland's National Energy Authority.

In her capacity as the Chair of the Scottish Arctic Network (ScAN), Daria also convened the panel on Arctic research networks at the Arctic Circle Assembly. The panel brought together the Arctic research networks form Ireland, Iceland, and Canada to discuss the challenges and opportunities of collaborating in Arctic research.
