Printing on campus is via networked multi-function devices (MFDs) and printers.
- MFDs and printers are capable of copying and scanning, as well as printing items selected from your print queue.
- You can also manage your print queue using the PaperCut print service.

- How do I print?

Send your output to a holding queue, then print from this queue at any MFD or printer.
To log in, simply hold your student ID card against the LOG IN sticker.Select the documents you want to print. Collect your printed documents and log out.

- Can I print from my phone or tablet device?

Yes!
Use the PaperCut web print service to upload or email your files to the University’s print queues from your tablet, mobile phone or laptop when you’re on the move. Then all you have to do is print your documents on any networked MFD.
Note: Unfortunately, it is not possible to specify a page range when printing from the PaperCut web print service. You can only print an entire document. However, if you only need to print one or two pages, or a range of pages, there are workarounds.
- What should I do if an MFD isn't working?

Please report any faults you encounter with a printing device - be it with card readers, low toner or mechanical failure.
To report a fault, scan the QR code on the MFD to report it directly to our supplier, Carbon. Alternatively, you can report if to the Service Desk via myit.abdn.ac.uk or servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk
Paying for printing FAQs
- How do I pay for printing and how much does it cost?

You have a printing budget from which charges for all printing and copying are deducted. Our user guide on Toolkit contains current charges, and information on how to top up your budget.
Each time you use your student ID card to print or photocopy, the cost is deducted automatically from your printing budget. As long as your budget remains in credit you can print.
New students start off with an initial print budget of £1.
- How do I top up my print budget?

Check your balance and top up online using the PaperCut print service.
- On classroom PCs, click the PrintManage Desktop shortcut
- On personal laptops/PCs or mobile devices, open a web browser and go to https://printmanage.abdn.ac.uk/
You will need to login to the system using your University username (e.g. u01abc01) and password.
Choose to make a payment of £1, £2, £5, £10, or £20.
Pay by Visa, Visa debit, or MasterCard.

Warning: Once paid for, print credits are non-refundable. So you must not top-up more than is needed as remaining amounts will not be refunded. - What happens when I run out of credit?

When you run out of credit, MFDs will display a ‘Credit too low’ message and your items will not print.

There are two ways you can do this.
Method 1
- Swipe into the MFD in the usual way and view your print queue.
- At the top left of the display, you'll see your name, the number of documents in your print queue, and the amount of credit remaining in your budget.
- So the student in the example below has £0.93 (93 pence) remaining credit.
Method 2
- Log into the PaperCut print service
- You should see the Summary screen - if not, select Summary on the navigation menu.
- Your remaining credit is displayed in the Balance box
- You can also select Transaction History to see a list of your recent transactions and the cost of each.
- Can I find out how much my printing is going to cost before I print?

Yes. There are two ways you can do this.
Method 1
- Swipe into the MFD in the usual way and view your print queue.
- To the immediate left of your document name and details, you'll see a figure. This is the charge for printing that document.
Method 2
- Log into the PaperCut print service and select Jobs Pending Release from the navigation menu to view your print queue.
- The cost of your print job is displayed in the Cost column.
- Can I get a refund for damaged or spoiled printouts?

Yes!
If you have damaged, illegible, or otherwise spoiled printouts due to printer malfunction, you are entitled to a refund on your print budget.
Great! What do I need to do?
Just bring your spoiled printouts to one of the IT Service Desks and we will credit your print budget.

This makes it easier to track your output in our print queues so we arrange credit more quickly, and also allows us to report major faults to our print provider Carbon if necessary.
