History
The University of Aberdeen is one of Scotland’s great Institutions. With over five hundred years of history and achievement behind us, we are also one of the oldest universities in the United Kingdom. Since our earliest days, we have constantly pursued excellence in learning, building on the strengths of our region and taking the results to the world beyond. Today, with over 16,000 students and some 3,000 staff, Aberdeen is a university internationally renowned for the quality of its teaching and research, serving one of the most dynamic regions in northern europe. Elphinstone HallThe Summer Graduation ceremonies are being held at the Elphinstone Hall at the heart of the University’s historic campus in Old Aberdeen. The Elphinstone Hall is a spacious and attractive oak-panelled Great Hall crowned by a magnificent pine ceiling in the Gothic style. Designed by A Marshall Mackenzie, it was built in 1931 to replace Bishop Elphinstone's original Great Hall which was demolished in 1870 to make way for King’s College Library. The style of the Hall replicates the late medieval Scottish Gothic style and is in perfect harmony with the older Chapel and the medieval charm of Old Aberdeen. |
