How do the fascinating and diverse plant communities of Svalbard, in the high Arctic, respond to a changing environment - and how in turn do tundra plants influence environmental change?

Svalbard lies half way between the north of Norway and the North pole, yet despite its high latitude it is home to a diverse flora which will be introduced in this talk. For the past 25 years ecologists from Aberdeen have been doing research on the vegetation of Svalbard, investigating the effects of changes in the environment, including rising numbers of breeding geese, atmospheric pollution and climate change. Perhaps the most important story to emerge from all this research is that the response of the vegetation to all these pressures has the potential to influence climate change itself. In this talk, Sarah Woodin will introduce you to some of the investigations which have been undertaken on Svalbard and will explain the importance of their findings.
