Philosophy, Mountaineering and Risk

We’ll consider questions arising directly from the film Touching the Void concerning the ethics of decision-making in risk-situations: Can cutting your companion’s rope ever be the right thing to do? Do different moral standards apply in extreme mountaineering situations? Given the risks involved, can mountaineering be justified?

The talk will be followed by a screening of the film at 7pm (also free).

The event is free but ticketed. Tickets available from the Belmont Filmhouse - call 01224 343 500 or book online.

Speakers

Philip Ebert is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Stirling. He’s been climbing (sport, trad, and bouldering) and ski-touring for many years in Scotland and Europe.

Simon Robertson is a Lecturer in Philosophy at Cardiff who in his spare time enjoys walking and climbing in the mountains.

Simon & Philip have co-authored numerous non-academic articles discussing a variety of philosophical issues to do with mountaineering and risk taking more generally.

Guy Robertson is an environmental consultant who has been climbing for 25 years and is probably best known for his Scottish winter climbing exploits, making lots of difficult first ascents across the country.  Over the years he has made successful exploratory expeditions to Peru, Kyrgyzstan, Norway, Morocco, Jordan, and the Western Alps, and more recently he compiled a book on Scottish mountaineering, ‘The Great Mountain Crags of Scotland’.
