MSc Welcome Reception with Guest Speaker

I have always been amazed as to just what we achieve. I am amazed at the immense scale and complexity of the technology and equipment we develop to solve unsolvable problems, the immense scale of the risks we manage and the scale of the impact that our industry has on modern society. My talk will encompass the challenge of drilling for oil in ultra deepwater, the scale of some recent mega development projects, the scale of some of the offshore construction equipment now available and the scale of the huge risks involved.

Graham is a graduate in Civil Engineering of the University of Aberdeen, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers. After graduating in 1973, he joined the Ove Arup Partnership where he worked for seven years on the design and construction of major road and rail bridge structures . He joined BP in 1980 as a civil engineer where he worked on BP projects and operations around the globe. In the period 1986-1990, he returned to Aberdeen where he was the Company Structural Engineering Technical Authority responsible for the integrity of BP's North Sea Installations. Subsequently he held senior positions including Engineering Manager Alaska Gas commercialisation and Director of Technology of BP's International Gas Division. From 2005 to 2010 he held the position of Vice President and Chief Engineer for BP Exploration and Production. He retired from BP in 2010 and is currently retained as a senior Advisor to BP, Schlumberger, and as an expert witness by Nabarro.
