May Festival Event Screening of The Waldheim Waltz, followed by Q & A chaired by Dr Katya Krylova
3-5pm, 25th May 2019
Auditorium, King's College Conference CentreJoin renowned Austrian filmmaker Ruth Beckermann for a screening of her award-winning film The Waldheim Waltz (2018), followed by a Q & A.
Beckermann has called The Waldheim Waltz (Berlin International Film Festival 2018 Glashütte Original Documentary Award; 2019 Austrian Film Prize for Best Documentary Film) 'a film about truth and lies or "alternative facts"'. The film focuses on the international scandal sparked in the late 1980s by former UN Secretary General and Austrian president Kurt Waldheim’s deception about his Nazi past.
Hosted by the VIEW programme of the George Washington Wilson Centre for Visual Culture, with the generous support of the Austrian Cultural Forum London and the Ingeborg Bachmann Centre at the Institute of Modern Languages Research, London.

May Festival Event
Kings College Conference CentreThe director of one of the most acclaimed movies of 2018, Stan & Ollie, is University of Aberdeen graduate Jon S. Baird.
In this special edition of the Director’s Cut series at the University’s May Festival, Jon will discuss breaking into the film industry and how growing up in Aberdeenshire contributed to the stories he developed into award-winning feature films: Filth (2013), starring James McAvoy, Jamie Bell and Jim Broadbent, is a provocative black comedy crime film based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, who also wrote Trainspotting.
Cass (2008), a crime drama set in the world of football hooliganism, is based on the real life events of writer Cass Pennant, who as an orphaned Jamaican baby was adopted by a white couple in London. Stan & Ollie, starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, is a poignant comedy drama written by Jeff Pope.
Jon Baird will also discuss working with Academy Award-winners Danny Boyle on Babylon (2014) and Martin Scorsese on Vinyl (2015).
